Question of the Week: Pick a contest

This week we will not have class on Thursday. If you are stuck for a blog topic, consider this: which of the contests listed in the Poets and Writers Submission Calendar seems most interesting to you, and why? What's interesting about the contest? The journal? The submission rules? The judge(s)?

  1. My favorite of the contests is Leapfrog's. Going beyond just short stories, this journal accepts novels and novellas as possibly entries. For $25, writers can submit no less than 22,000 words and have a chance to win a publication contract offer from Leapfrog Press, with an advance payment, and permanent listing as a Leapfrog Fiction Contest winner. While my story isn't complete, submitting to Leapfrog might at least give me a direction. Stephen King said he was often rejected, by then asked to continue submitting work because the judges still found his voice appealing. Winning would be great, but any response for my initial work will be helpful in moving forward, or at least let me know if Leapfrog is actually the best option for future recognition. Who knows, an agent may have enough confidence in it to take a chance!
